Sensus communis
As I read Gadamer's discussion of the
basis for the claim of validity in the humanities for being a science
in its own right, he brings in the the sensus communis.
I was just thinking about this an one
form of validation for a communal agreement in a culture for
something that rings true, a reflection in common experience and
interpretation.
Gadamer brings in many thinkers from
antiquity to post WWII, and his reasoning for bringing in the
fundamental sensus communis is
of a different depth and scope than mine, but it gives me support in
the need for referencing my thought to the common cultural sense.
Further,
in the life and experience of the sacred, of the encounter with God's
Kingdom on earth, my focus is on the communal experience primarily -
the one based in the fellowship of believers, as they meet and
worship God together. The individual defines his or her understanding
of the sacred based on the common perception.
